A Musical Journey of Recovery

I feel that some songs resonate with the 12 Steps of recovery:

  • I am humbled and inspired by the enduring vision painted in "Image", by John Lennon.

  • Sting's "Message in a Bottle" is the cry for Help from people who are still suffering.  "Save Our Souls!" they cry out.

  • "Home by the Sea", by Phil Collins.  No song I have heard yet resonates more strongly with how [insane] I was before finding the 12 steps of recovery; the feeling of "family", and "comfort of home" I feel at most meetings; the process of purging the ghosts of my previous life; the unconditional love poured out by people sitting down and listening to each other with such patience and understanding.  The music has an eery style, so much like the mystery of how Alcoholics Anonymous works.

  • "The Power of Love", by Frankie Goes to Hollywood says, "Purge the Soul.  Make Love your goal." Not only a death-defying process, but a path to unimagineable freedom and happiness. So simple and so powerful.

  • "Welcome to my World", by Jim Reeves (also sung by Elvis Presley).  All you have to do is knock, and your door to recovery will open. And maybe a few miracles!

  • "Hurts so Good", by John Mellencamp.

Imagine - John Lennon

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
